Understanding OxyContin

OxyContin is a legal prescription medication that was formulated to treat individuals with moderate to severe pain. When taken properly and under the supervision of a physician, this drug is incredibly effective in helping many individuals lead a fulfilling, pain-free life. Today, however, the wide availability of this medication has led to increases in abuse and misuse, as well as a higher number of addictions. One of the fasting growing groups taking OxyContin for non-medical reasons is teenagers. In most cases, teens will gain access to OxyContin by taking the pills from a family member with a prescription. Other individuals may develop a dependence on the medication after receiving a legitimate prescription. Over time, their body starts to need the drug just to function normally.

How Addiction Develops

OxyContin comes in a pill form, and is intended to be taken orally. It is manufactured with a controlled-release coating, which is intended to release the pain-relieving components of the drug in a gradual manner. Those suffering from an addiction to OxyContin may choose to crush the pill up, thus destroying this coating. This way, they will receive the pleasurable feelings brought about by the drug immediately. Many users will report experiencing strong feelings of euphoria after consuming OxyContin. This rush of happiness is likened to the high received from taking strong illicit drugs like heroin. Addictions to this medication are common because users become hooked on this pleasurable state, and are driven to seek it out over and over again.

Determining when an actual addiction to OxyContin can at times be difficult, because many addicted individuals engage in secretive behaviors as a way to hide their use. Eventually, though, a number of signs and symptoms of their addiction will begin to show, as consuming the drug becomes a compulsion and obsession in their daily life. Users who have used OxyContin for prolonged periods of time will start to have negative health issues as a result of their use. Some of the common health side effects include muscle spasms, slowing of the heart rate, severe constipation, blockages in the bloodstream, and persistent vomiting. Because of the seriousness of these complications, a person suffering from an addiction to OxyContin should seek treatment immediately.

Signs of OxyContin Addiction

People who are suffering from an addiction to OxyContin will display a wide variety of symptoms and behaviors that range in severity. The most common signs of OxyContin addiction users will display include:

  • Euphoria
  • Itching
  • Light headedness
  • Constipation
  • Low blood pressure
  • Sedation
  • Drowsiness/nodding off
  • Respiratory suppression
  • Dry mouth
  • Sweating
  • Headache

Some of these are particularly dangerous, such as respiratory suppression, as they can lead to serious risks to health and in some cases even death.

OxyContin Detox At Malibu Beach Recovery Centers

As California’s leading detox center, there is no level of OxyContin we can’t handle. We are wholly committed to treating the entire individual, which means that we not only address the physical symptoms brought on by detox, but also the very important emotional and psychological symptoms that need to be treated. When clients enter our facility to detox from OxyContin, we provide them with the tools to remain strong, motivated, and most importantly, safe. Detox can be incredibly difficult, and even dangerous. For this reason, we constantly monitor each patient throughout the entire detox process, checking vitals regularly and administering care when necessary.

We highly recommend that individuals detoxing from OxyContin do so by gradually reducing their dose of the medication over time. Though this increases the length of time spent detoxing, it is much safer and better for the body. Going “cold turkey,” or immediately stopping all consumption of OxyContin, can produce a severe shock to the body that can be potentially life threatening. However, should a patient decide this is the best route for their recovery, our highly-trained medical staff are willing and able to guide clients through this process.

OxyContin Withdrawal Symptoms

Patients should expect to experience a variety of unpleasant withdrawal symptoms during their detoxifications. These symptoms occur because the body has grown accustomed to receiving OxyContin on a daily basis, and is dependent on it to function. Once the drug is no longer is the system, the body must quickly attempt to adjust to the unfamiliar drug-free state. Patients starting their detox should expect to experience the onset of withdrawal symptoms with 24 hours of their last dose of OxyContin. Some of the common withdrawal symptoms recovery patients will experience include cold and/or hot flashes, vomiting, insomnia, coughing, abdominal pain, anxiety, weakness, and nausea. In some cases, more severe symptoms will occur, including seizures and convulsions.

These more severe withdrawal symptoms can be incredibly dangerous. For this reason, it is highly recommended that detox only take place under the care of medical professionals in a treatment center that is equipped to handle any potential complications. At Malibu Beach Recovery Centers, our clients can rest assured that we are ready to handle anything that might occur during their detox. In some cases, it may be appropriate to prescribe additional medication to patients in order to ease their more intense withdrawal symptoms. In other cases, this may not be appropriate for patients. All patients, however, are encouraged to participate in both group and individual counseling during detox as a way to help them remain motivated and confident.
