Understanding Heroin

Heroin is drug that belongs to the opioid family, and is created from morphine. It is typically found as a black sticky substance (“black tar heroin”), or as a white or brown powder. It is an illegal drug that has a high risk for addiction because it is so incredibly powerful, and works quickly to impact the brain of its users. It can be consumed in a number of different ways, which include smoking, inhalation, or injection. Once the drug has reached the brain, it causes very intense feelings of pleasure. This euphoria puts people at risk for developing an addiction, as they start to seek this pleasurable state over and over again. Prolonged use of heroin can wreak havoc on the body, causing symptoms that are not only unpleasant but can even be life threatening. Heroin users are at a constant risk for fatal overdose, and are more likely to contract diseases such as hepatitis or HIV. Users may even suffer from pulmonary complications, such as pneumonia.

How Heroin Addiction Develops

A recent estimate found that of all individuals who have used heroin, a whopping 23% will develop a dependence on the drug. An addiction to heroin is diagnosed when someone has no control over their use, and becomes obsessed with acquiring and using it on a regular basis. People who have reached the point of addiction will likely experience incredibly unpleasant withdrawal symptoms if they go a period of time without using the drug. This is because over time, the body develops a dependence on the drug just to function normally. The brain has in fact become chemically altered. No matter how badly a person may want to cease their use of heroin, it is incredibly difficult to do so alone. Instead, it is often necessary to enter a specialized treatment facility to safely detox from the drug and receive the necessary support and resources to stay sober.

Signs and Symptoms of Heroin Use

Because of the powerful nature of heroin, its use can cause a variety of physical and even psychological symptoms in its users. Some of the more immediate symptoms that users have reported experiencing after using heroine include dry mouth, itching, vomiting, and nausea. These immediate symptoms can eventually give way to a set of more serious symptoms that have a delayed onset. The body will begin to slow down and become less alert, resulting in a slowed heart rate, slowed breathing, feelings of drowsiness, and a foggy mental state. Further, many individuals under the influence of heroin will experience “nodding,” which is when a person alternates between periods of being awake and asleep.

Prolonged use of heroin over time will eventually take a toll on the body. This can manifest in a number of ways including heart problems, skin abscesses and injections at injection sites, liver and kidney disease, and collapsed veins.

Our Detoxification Process

At Malibu Beach Recovery Centers, we’ve worked hard to develop a highly effective process for helping our clients detox from heroin safely. Our most important asset is our knowledgeable staff of medical professionals who are equipped to handle heroin addictions of all severities. Without judgment, each patient is assessed in a professional and thorough manner, so that we can provide the best course of treatment. We conduct a number of assessments on our patients prior to the start of detox, so that we can build a detox plan that yields positive results. We will conduct a medical examination, psychological assessment, home and work life assessment, spiritual assessment, and more, all of which helps us build a strong and effective detoxification plan.

Once this plan has been created, we prepare our clients for detox. The uncertainty of what to expect during the detox process often leaves people weary of quitting their use or unsuccessful when they attempt to detox on their own. At West Los Angeles’ top-rated detox center, our clients are told what to expect during this difficult time, and are prepped with the resources and support they’ll need to stay strong.

As one of California’s leading detoxification centers, we are ready to handle heroin addictions of all degrees of severity. We make it our mission to make sure that all clients who enter our center to detox are kept comfortable throughout the detox process, and that they are continually monitored to effectively track their progress. In some cases, it may be appropriate to prescribe additional medication to recovery patients in order to lessen the impact of their uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms.

Heroin Withdrawal Symptoms

During detoxification, withdrawal symptoms are likely. The severity and duration of these symptoms, however, varies between patients. When detoxing from heroin, some of the most common withdrawal symptoms recovery patients experience include: nausea and vomiting, increased tearing, dilated pupils, yawning, loss of appetite, cold sweats, diarrhea, seizures, muscle cramping, depression and anxiety, and mood instability. A number of these symptoms can become particularly intense, and therefore detox should only take place under the careful monitoring of a physician in a treatment facility.

During detox, most patients will start to feel the onset of these unpleasant symptoms with about 12 hours of their last use of the drug. After the first few days, the most uncomfortable symptoms will typically occur, and after about five to seven days they will start to subside. Some patients may experience prolonged withdrawal symptoms that persist longer than this time frame. In extreme cases, for those individuals who have consumed large amounts of heroin over a long period of time, withdrawal can last for weeks or even months.
