FUN IN RECOVERY
It is no secret that with recovery, there is work involved. The disease of addiction calls for close and diligent self examination. Addiction is a serious problem that calls for serious course of action. That said the life of a recovering addict is a joyous one. Questions that will often arise from addicts in early recovery are 1. What will I do with myself now? 2. What will become of my social life? 3. Will I ever have fun again? Your social life in recovery is nothing to get discouraged about.
A common misconception is that once we stop drinking civilization as we know it is over. In reality, it is quite the contrary. Most recovering drug addicts and alcoholics who have made it past the beginning stages of recovery will tell you that they are in the midst of an amazing life that has exponentially exceeded their expectations. Once we begin the recovery process all the options in the world seem to just open up to us. We are sociable and enjoyable people to be around.
One of the first places to look for fun and entertainment in sobriety seems to be social events put on by 12 Step programs, such as picnics and dances. Many recovering drug addicts and alcoholics will attend Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous conventions. Such events will usually consist of a dance and a meeting. We are afforded opportunities to travel and see new things. Many in recovery get to travel all over the world. We are constantly meeting new people and are introduced to new things. Ultimately the source of much enjoyment comes from camaraderie attained from involvement in a fellowship.
Over time, recovering addicts and alcoholics come to realize that their lives have turned around in such a drastic way that social woe is the farthest thing from their minds. They find themselves employable, efficient and productive members of society. People in recovery often view themselves as having the world at their fingertips, social acceptability seems to be an added perk. To quote the Alcoholics Anonymous Basic Text: "We are not a glum lot."
